City okays Bush’s work

The much anticipated, but long delayed opening of another restaurant in Brownfield took a step forward recently when the City Council directed engineers to proceed with plans for infrastructure that will facilitate construction of Bush’s Chicken on the Lubbock Highway. By unanimous consent, the council authorized Lubbock engineering firm Parkhill, Smith and Cooper to develop plans to extend water and sewer lines onto the property formerly designated as a possible hotel site, south of Chisolm Travel Center.

The action is contingent on the expected approval of a $50,000 infrastructure grant from the Brownfield Industrial Development Corp., which will consider the request next week. That grant, which BIDCorp. director David Partlow said is included in the current budget as a $100,000 contingency fund, is in line with the mission of his organization.

Partlow showed the council how the new restaurant could inject as much as $700,000 into Brownfield’s economy on an annual basis through payroll and taxes. The restaurant will add a $750,000 building to local tax rolls and employ as many as 40 people in both full and part time positions, he said. Engineer Holly Holder also told the council that the utility extension could facilitate additional business growth in that area of the Lubbock Hwy.
